Waterworks Park is bounded by a protected nature preserve, the Portage River, and Lake Erie; and is a toxic Brownfield. The entire park is land fill over the old Portage River bed, so it’s clay, sand and some nasty stuff. A 500 page FOIA document states contamination is above limits, for commercial use, for volatile and semi-volatile hydrocarbons, benzene, naphthalene and arsenic. CORD contends that any disruption of the contaminated soil would have dire environmental consequences to the river, Lake Erie, the preserve and residents. Any disruption of the soil should require an environmental impact statement.

Contaminants in the Environment: How can I be exposed? This video will show you where contaminants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) like Benzo(a)pyrene and benzo(b)fluoranthene , go when they enter the environment and how you can be exposed to them.
The EPA Priority Pollutants List are a set of chemical pollutants EPA regulates, and for which EPA has published analytical test methods.
